I just wanted to share with y’all one of my favoritest and most well loved coffee table reads, North American Railroads by John Taylor (ISBN 0-517-05397-7). It’s full of hundreds of beautiful archival photos detailing not only the trains but the lives of the people who built, worked, and rode on the great American railroads of yesteryear.
This book went to print in 1991, so a good portion of the 500 photos probably only exist in private collections and can’t be found on the internet. I can’t imagine the time and effort that went into collecting and assembling everything for this book. If you can find a copy for sale it’s well worth it!
